Pro-Consulting analysts prepared a market research of PET preforms in Ukraine

The preforms are made by granular polymer pressform - polyethylene terephthalate. Properties of the future packaging products are laid on this stage.

PET preform market is greatly depends on imports, as Ukraine at the moment has not enough capacity for the production of raw materials for PET pellets. National operators have to import pellets, in order to support the production of PET preforms at a high enough level.

The most saturated market of PET in Ukraine was in 2010 - at that time the market capacity was 160 thousand tons. In 2011, the market declined by 17%. At the end of 2012 the market capacity of PET in real terms grew by 12.7% and amounted to 149.3 thousand tons.

At the moment the formation of the market of PET preforms is completing. Enterprises-consumers are trying to establish its own production of PET. It should be admitted that in recent years, domestic production of preforms predominates on the market. The main advantage of Ukrainian preforms is its lower cost.

Geographical structure of ready PET-preforms supply in Ukraine is characterized by consistentcy. Belarus is a major importer with 29.9% of the total market share. It is followed by Hungary (26.2%), Russia (17.4%), Moldova (15.7 %), Poland (4.1%), Lithuania (2%). The share of the rest importers is 4.7%. Imports of PET preforms in 2012 decreased by 15 % in volume and 25 % in value .

Over the past years, there has been an increase in prices of imported PET-preforms. Compared with 2009, when the average cost of preforms was 11.71 UAH per kg, in 2010 there was growth rate in price of 16.4%. In 2011, the cost for the product was 17.6 UAH per kg. In 2012 the growth rate in prices of imported PET-preforms was negative -3.1 %.
